Today marks the first day of the new football season, when at 8:30pm tonight, the Baltimore Ravens will be taking on the Denver Broncos. Sports video games have always been a staple, since the beginning of the platform. (Remember, “Pong” is table tennis!) One of the classic football games of our time, is the variety of games from Tecmo, with such football classics as Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl. Every year, fan website TecmoBowl.Org gets together to release an updated version of the classic game, and this year is no exception, with the latest edition, “Tecmo Super Bowl 2014” now available for download.

The original Tecmo Super Bowl was released for the NES in December of 1991. It has the distinction of being the very first sports video game that had licensing privileges with both the league that the game was based on (via the National Football League), as well as the player’s association (the National Football League Players Association). This allowed Tecmo Super Bowl to use both the names of actual NFL teams as well as players at the same time. Previously, games only sought the rights for one or the other. This is the seventh edition of the update, which brings to classic gamers up-to-date rosters, enhanced graphics, current schedules and play books, for each of the 32 National Football League squads. “Tecmo Super Bowl 2014” brings Nintendo’s bone-crunching classic to modern computers and mobile devices, as long as you have the ability to play via an emulator. Some of the features of the updated title, as according to TecmoBowl.Org:

  • 32-Team ROM
  • Current rosters (As of September 2, 2013)
  • Adjustable quarter length
  • Playbook editing in-game
  • Player 2 attributes now display correctly
  • Halftime statistics
  • Passing Accuracy now works. Passing Accuracy determines if a pass will be completed. Pass Control determines if the ball will be on target.
  • Quickness now works. This will be the maximum speed of a defender if they pick up a fumble or make an interception.
  • In order to get the proper Pro Bowl players, you will need to reset the season from the Schedule menu.

The new game is available as an “.NES” file, giving you lots of compatibility with most current NES emulators, either on a computer or on your mobile device of choice. (Obviously, no Apple-based mobile platforms are supported due to Apple’s views on emulation.) The file is available for free at the TecmoBowl.Org website. So if you are anxiously waiting for football season to officially start (or if tonight’s scheduled game isn’t your home team), give this a quick download, and let the season begin! And special thanks to Retro Collect for bringing this to our attention.
